Our Grounding

In May 2026, Pope Leo XIV signed Magnifica Humanitas, an encyclical written for the Church’s discernment of the human person in the time of artificial intelligence. It reads the “new things” of AI the way Catholic Social Doctrine has read every major social transformation: through the dignity of the human person, the common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity with the vulnerable and the overburdened.

For a parish, this is not abstract. The people most affected by AI in parish life are not theologians — they are the secretary managing the bulletin and the phone, the DRE holding religious education together, the pastor signing off on everything, and the diocesan staff trying to write sensible policy. Magnifica Humanitas insists that any tool brought into that world must remain ordered toward human flourishing: tools serve people; people do not become extensions of tools.

UrbanPyx exists to do that translation work — from encyclical to office, from principle to workflow. We write, build, and teach so that parishes can adopt what genuinely helps and confidently decline what doesn’t.

The seven tests

Every essay we publish, every tool we build, and every engagement we take is examined against seven practical questions drawn from the encyclical:

1. Does this safeguard the dignity of the human person?
2. Does this strengthen parish mission and the common good?
3. Does this preserve human judgment, responsibility, and pastoral care?
4. Does this protect sensitive data and vulnerable people?
5. Does this increase local capacity instead of creating dependency?
6. Does this make the parish more humane, truthful, and trustworthy?
7. Does this resist the temptation to optimize what should be loved, discerned, or personally carried?

If a tool or workflow fails one of these tests, we say so plainly — including our own.
